How Locals Choose Seafood in Key West

We don't publish restaurant rankings. Lists go stale within a season, they get gamed, and they answer the wrong question anyway — the useful question isn't which restaurant is best, it's which kind of meal you're in the mood for.
So here's the framework locals actually use: pick the experience first, then the place. It survives menu changes, chef departures and whatever opened last month.
Four kinds of seafood meal, and when each is right
These are experience categories rather than recommendations. Any of them can be excellent or mediocre depending on the specific place, which is why the questions further down matter.
- Dockside and working waterfront
- You eat where the boats tie up, often at picnic tables, sometimes with your own catch. The appeal is freshness and atmosphere rather than polish. Best when you want the island's working character with lunch attached.
- White tablecloth
- Serious kitchens doing considered things with local fish. Reservations matter more here, seasonally, and this is where a special evening belongs. Ask about the day's local catch rather than ordering from habit.
- Off-Duval neighborhood
- A street or two off the main strip, where businesses live on repeat custom rather than foot traffic. Consistently where locals point visitors, and consistently better value than the equivalent on the strip.
- Cook your catch
- Some restaurants will prepare fish you caught that day. It's the most memorable version of a fishing trip, and it requires planning: ask your captain who does it and what condition the fish needs to arrive in.
The local heuristic
Distance from the busiest blocks is the single most useful signal in this town. Places that survive on foot traffic optimize for volume; places a street or two away survive on people coming back. That's not a rule about quality so much as a rule about incentives, and it holds up remarkably well.
The second signal is specificity. A menu that names the boat, the day's catch or the local species is telling you something a menu offering forty items cannot. Ask what came in today — the answer, and how readily it comes, tells you most of what you need to know.
What to ask, anywhere
- What came in today, and what would you order?
- Is the fish local, and which species?
- Do you need a reservation for this time of year?
- Is there a quieter room or an outside table, depending on what I want?
- If I bring my own catch, do you cook it, and how should it arrive?
Practicalities that affect eating well here
- Hours and seasonal closures shift, especially in shoulder season — confirm rather than assume
- Reservation norms change with the season; one dinner booked ahead is usually the right number
- Key lime pie is genuinely a local thing and varies wildly; try more than one before forming an opinion
- Boat days end salty and tired — plan the good dinner for a non-boat evening
- Stone crab and other species are seasonal; ask what's actually in season rather than what's on the menu

Why don't you list the best restaurants?
Because we'd be guessing, and because a ranked list is the least durable thing we could publish. Kitchens change, seasons change, and every affiliate site in this market already ranks whatever pays. Teaching you how locals choose is more useful in a year's time — and it's honest about what we actually know.
Is Duval Street food worth it?
Some of it is genuinely good, and being on the strip is part of the experience once. But the strip's economics favor volume, so the average is lower and the prices are higher. One street over is the reliable upgrade.
Can I really get my catch cooked?
Often yes, and it's the most satisfying dinner of a fishing trip. It needs arranging in advance: ask your captain which restaurants do it, how the fish should be cleaned and packed, and call ahead. Don't turn up with a cooler and hope.
