Cruise Day Checklist
For a Key West port call, built around all-aboard rather than around activities.
A Key West port day is unusually good and unusually unforgiving about time. This checklist front-loads the timing math, because that's the part that ruins port days.
Fill in the times before you go ashore. Doing this arithmetic on the pier is how people end up sprinting.
Before you go ashore
Do this over breakfast, not at the gangway.
- Confirmed whether the ship runs on ship time or local time
- Wrote down all-aboard from the daily program (it is earlier than departure)
- Confirmed which pier you're using and whether a shuttle is involved
- Budgeted the return walk or shuttle — both directions
- Subtracted a buffer of about an hour from all-aboard
- Saved the ship's port-agent number in your phone
Booking sanity checks
- Only one activity booked for the day — no chains
- Asked the operator for their worst-case return time, not their best
- Confirmed the activity ends inside your buffer
- Asked what happens if the trip runs long or the ship's schedule changes
- Confirmed the departure point and how far it is from your pier on foot
Ashore kit
- Ship card and photo ID
- One payment card and a little cash
- Phone charged, with a battery pack if you're shooting photos
- Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen
- Refillable water bottle
- Light rain shell in summer
The return
- Set two phone alarms: one to start heading back, one hard deadline
- Planned to browse near the waterfront rather than far from it late in the day
- Agreed a meeting point in case the group splits up
- Know where the pier entrance is before you need it
