First-Time Visitor Checklist

The one-page version of a well-planned first Key West trip.

Everything a first trip needs, and deliberately nothing more. The most common first-timer mistake is booking too much, so this list is short on purpose.

If you're arriving by cruise ship, use the cruise-day checklist instead — the timing math changes everything.

Before you leave home

  • Lodging booked (do this first and earliest)
  • One main water day booked, scheduled early in the trip
  • One sunset outing booked
  • Nothing else booked — leave the rest for the island
  • Departure day left completely clear
  • Parking question settled with your lodging
  • Weather and cancellation policies read and screenshotted

Set expectations honestly

  • The reef needs a boat — the beaches here are modest
  • The nightlife is contained to a few blocks and easy to avoid or find
  • The island is small, walkable and a little scruffy in places
  • Wind matters more than rain for boat trips
  • Afternoon heat is the real constraint on walking days

First 24 hours

  • Nothing demanding booked on arrival day
  • Walked a few blocks to orient
  • Found the nearest coffee, grocery and pharmacy
  • Confirmed tomorrow's activity and check-in time
  • Checked where your departure dock actually is

Pack the essentials

  • Reef-safe sunscreen and rash guards
  • Broken-in walking shoes
  • Dry bag
  • One warm layer for evenings on the water
  • Refillable water bottles

Confirm directly with your provider

  • Check-in time (always earlier than departure) and exact meeting point
  • What's included versus what you bring
  • Age minimums and gear for anyone in your party who needs them
  • The weather policy and how they'll reach you
